The Book

Book

This book, written in the Dutch language, with its title "Een eerlijcke plaets" tells us about a period beginning in the 16th century and ending in the 20the century. In the 16th century we begin to hear about Jewish people needing permission to live in the town of Wageningen. What kind of restrictions they had to face and what kind of privileges were granted. In the 17the century we hear about permission given to Jews to start a bank and to lend money to civilians. An activity mainly undertaken by Jewish people in Wageningen and elsewhere.

The stories in the 18th, 19th and 20th century tell us about important events and persons , who played an important role in the Jewish religious community or in the governing body of the community of Wageningen.
The main title "Een eerlijcke plaets" translated in English means "An honest place". This title originates from a charter from 1668, where the holder of the bank Isaac Adolphs was given "an honest place" in the east part of the town to serve as cemetery for him and his family.

To Jews, who lived in the neighboring communities of Wageningen attention is paid in a separate chapter. Jews from the municipalities Ede, Renkum, Wageningen en Rhenen, who were transported to the concentration-camps and never returned, have been mentioned in this book.

This Memorbook has been published by the "Foundation Jewish Monument Wageningen and neighbouring communities". It is seen by this foundation as a monument for the Jewish inhabitants of Wageningen and its neighbouring communities.
